Can Anyone Write Good Content?

Anyone Can Write Good Content Can’t They?

Yes, well mostly, but potentially yes. I consider myself to be in a small group of people with both the creative talent, and precise skill, to write professionally. Many people do have to write as part of their day to day activities, an email, a formal letter to a client, an invoice or contract. These are all very formulaic methods of communication in writing, and a lot of these are using templates that are long established norms.

Most people would struggle to get beyond this level of creative writing, filling in the blanks, painting by numbers. A lot of people do aim higher though, they want to express themselves in writing, and maybe even to share an opinion. Are they trained in persuasive writing? Often not. Do they have any academic qualifications in their subject matter? Even more rarely. Have they used correct grammar, punctuation and spelling? Almost never. The majority of writing that you read online will have been written by people with minimal formal education, and no specific training, the same way that most of the photographs and videos you will see online were also shot by amateurs.

Writing is now a lot more accessible as a medium than almost any other time period, yet it also has its disadvantages. Despite word processors being more powerful than ever, they can only spot misspelled words, and not incorrect usage. A word processor can spot basic grammatical and punctuation errors, but not tense usage or other common mistakes. There is a definite rise in the popularity of other mediums, such as digital graphic images, photography, animation and recorded audio or video. These are much more forgiving of the less literate, inexperienced, and the uninitiated. These other mediums also suffer from one clear disadvantage though, search engines will only find them based on the text accompanying them. A video may contain thousands of uses of a keyword or phrase, but it will not be indexed by a search engine for those keywords or key phrases unless they are in the video’s description, or tags, or even in the comments.

For search to work effectively, there will always have to be text, well written, informative, compelling, and persuasive text. Can an AI write as well as we can? Not yet, which I am grateful for of course, but there are AI writers out there who can provide pretty convincing articles, that with some proofreading/copyediting, could read well, and as they are seem to just be poorly written but definitely readable.

What if you want to create a piece of writing that does persuade, inform and is written impeccably? Well you go to someone with the requisite skills, qualifications and experience, someone like me. I will take the technical jargon laden product description, written by one of your engineers, and copyedit it so that your customers know exactly what the product will do for them, and why they need it in their lives. I will proofread anything your existing marketing department has come up with, maybe offering soft suggestions about tone and language usage. If you want bespoke copywriting, I can create that too, with email, instant messaging or even video consultations available.

I can copywrite with SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) in mind, ensuring that your keywords appear organically within the text, without reducing the readability. This will ensure that your content is found for the search terms people are using in their internet search engines. Online search is now the primary method consumers use for the discovery of new products and services, with more traditional forms of advertising and marketing struggling to compete.
